How to Cleanse and Charge Your Crystals

Simple Clearing Methods That Actually Work
If you've ever wondered whether you need to cleanse your crystals — the short answer is yes.
But not in an overwhelming, ritual-heavy way.
Cleansing and charging your crystals isn't about perfection. It's about reset. Just like we need rest, fresh air, or a deep breath after a long day, crystals benefit from a little energetic clearing too.
Especially after travel.
After a busy show.
After being handled by many hands.
Think of it less as “fixing” and more as refreshing.
If you wear crystal jewellery regularly, building in a simple reset ritual can keep both the stone and the copper feeling aligned and cared for. (For practical metal care, you can read more in my guide to 👉 [Caring for your Copper Jewellery].)
Do Crystals Really Need Cleansing?
Some people believe crystals constantly transmute energy and don't need clearing. Others cleanse religiously.
For me? It’s less about the crystal being “dirty” and more about intention.
When I cleanse a stone, I’m resetting the energy between it and me.
After a show, for example, my pieces have absorbed a lot — curiosity, admiration, maybe even someone’s heavy day. A quick clearing brings them back to neutral.
It’s not dramatic. It’s practical.
If you wear your crystals regularly (especially as jewellery), they’re constantly interacting with your energy and environment.
I always recommend cleansing pieces you wear often—especially your daily talismans.

My Preferred Ways to Cleanse Crystals
You do not need every method under the sun. Choose what feels natural to you.
Here are the ones I use regularly.
Smoke Cleansing (Fast & Effective)

My go-to method is smoke — especially after shows when I need to cleanse multiple pieces quickly.
Palo Santo is my preferred wood for clearing stagnant or heavy energy. I gently pass each piece through the smoke with intention. It’s simple and efficient, especially when working with larger batches of jewellery.
Smoke cleansing works beautifully for:
-
Bulk cleansing
-
Post-event resets
-
Jewellery pieces
Smoke cleansing is my go-to after shows or busy days—it’s quick, grounding, and effective.
It’s also a beautiful way to reconnect with the intention behind the piece you’re wearing.
Pieces made with grounding stones (like Moss Agate or Jasper) tend to respond especially well to this kind of ritual → Moss Agate Forest Talisman
Sound Clearing (Subtle but Powerful)
In my home studio, I often use sound.
I have a singing bowl tuned to the heart chakra, and the vibration alone shifts the feel of the room — and the stones within it.
Sound is especially lovely because:
-
It requires no physical contact.
-
It’s safe for all stone types.
-
It feels gentle and expansive.
Sometimes I’ll simply let the tone ring and move pieces within that vibration. The reset feels almost immediate.
Selenite for Passive Clearing
Selenite is one of those stones that seems to hold a steady, high frequency.
I keep selenite slabs nearby when I’m working — especially when handling donated recyclables or incorporating reclaimed materials into a new piece.
I’ll place individual stones or finished jewellery on the slab to rest.
It’s a quiet method. Not flashy. But steady.

Selenite is one of my favourite tools because it does the work for you.
I often keep pieces on a selenite slab while I’m working on them—or when they need a reset.
You’ll occasionally see selenite incorporated into my designs as well → Selenite pendant
Full Moon Energy (Seasonal Favorite)
During the warmer months, full moon energy is top priority.
There’s something deeply satisfying about letting stones rest under open sky. It feels cyclical. Natural. Unrushed.

Full moon charging works beautifully when:
-
You want a monthly reset ritual.
-
You enjoy aligning with lunar cycles.
-
You want your stones to sit in stillness overnight.
Just remember to bring them in before morning moisture or unexpected weather — especially with copper, which naturally develops character over time. (If you’re curious about why copper behaves the way it does, you might enjoy reading about it here 👉 [Copper Lore].)
What About Water Cleansing?
Water can be beautiful — but it’s not safe for every stone.
Some crystals are porous. Some dissolve. Some can lose polish or structural integrity when soaked.
If you’re unsure, skip water.
Smoke, sound, moonlight, or selenite are safer universal options.
When it comes to copper jewellery specifically, prolonged water exposure can also accelerate tarnish. A gentle wipe and energetic clearing is often better than soaking.
How Often Should You Cleanse Crystals?
There’s no rigid schedule.
You might cleanse:
-
After purchasing a new piece.
-
After a particularly emotional day.
-
After a show or event.
-
During the full moon.
-
Whenever it simply feels right.
Trust your intuition here too.
If it feels heavy, reset it.
How to Charge Your Crystals
Charging is simply about refreshing intention.
After cleansing, hold your stone or jewellery in your hands. Set a clear thought. It doesn’t have to be elaborate.
It can be as simple as:
“I invite clarity.”
“I welcome grounded energy.”
“I move forward with confidence.”
Crystals respond beautifully to clarity.
