Spirals: The Ancient Symbol Woven Into Our Jewellery (and Souls)

Spirals: The Ancient Symbol Woven Into Our Jewellery (and Souls)

If you’ve hung around Mother of Metal for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve got a thing for spirals. They sneak into my Palm Portals, wind around gemstone cages, become Goddesses, and somehow always find their way into my copper wire. Coincidence? Not a chance. Spirals have been captivating humans since the first cave-dweller thought, “Hmm, let me doodle this swirl on a rock.”

So, let’s take a cosmic tumble down the spiral staircase of history, lore, and magic, shall we?

🌌 Spirals Across Time & Culture

  • Neolithic Stone Carvings: Some of the oldest spirals known are carved into stones at Newgrange in Ireland (we’re talking 5,000 years ago). They weren’t random doodles—they marked cycles of the sun and moon. Spirals = cosmic calendars before iPhones existed.

  • Celtic Spirals: Our Celtic ancestors were spiral-obsessed. Single spirals for personal growth, double spirals for balance, and triple spirals (triskele) for that holy trifecta of life, death, and rebirth.

  • Indigenous Traditions: Many First Nations and Indigenous cultures see the spiral as a path of learning, a visual reminder that life is a journey—always moving, but often looping back to deepen wisdom.

  • Greek & Roman Art: Think Ionic columns, snail shells, and labyrinth patterns. Spirals = beauty + brains, the universal aesthetic flex.

🌀 The Spiral in Nature (Mother Earth’s Signature)

  • Galaxies: Our Milky Way? Yep, a giant spiral. Every time you look up at the night sky, you’re literally inside a cosmic swirl.

  • Fibonacci Sequence: Sunflowers, pinecones, seashells—spirals everywhere! Mother Nature is basically a math genius.

  • DNA: Our very blueprint is a double helix spiral. The universe really doubled down on the swirl aesthetic.

🔮 Spiritual Symbolism

Spirals aren’t just pretty—they’re powerful symbols of energy and intention. Here’s the lowdown:

  • Growth & Transformation: Starting small at the centre, the spiral expands outward—like our own personal evolution.

  • Energy Flow: Spirals represent how energy moves, inward for receiving, outward for projecting. (Cue my Palm Portals doing their thing!)

  • Cycles & Continuity: Birth, death, rebirth. The spiral reminds us nothing is linear, but everything connects.

  • Portal Magic: Spirals are gateways between the physical and the spiritual, a favourite visual for shamans, mystics, and, yes, jewellery makers.

✨ Spirals in Jewellery (Why I Use Them)

When I weave a spiral into copper, it’s never just decorative. It’s a story in motion:

  • A left-turning spiral draws energy inward—perfect for grounding, receiving, or calling in abundance.

  • A right-turning spiral sends energy outward—ideal for manifestation, protection, or sending love vibes into the world.

  • Paired together (like in my Palm Portals), they become tools of balance: left hand receives, right hand projects.

So when you slip on one of my spiral designs, you’re not just accessorizing. You’re plugging into one of humanity’s oldest and most enduring symbols of magic, growth, and cosmic connection.

🌿 Closing Thoughts (aka Why Spirals Won’t Quit Me)

Every time my pliers twist into a spiral, I feel like I’m linking hands with every ancestor who ever carved one into stone, painted one on pottery, or traced one in sand. Spirals remind us that we’re part of a greater dance—life looping, expanding, circling back, and moving ever forward.

And let’s be real: they just look damn good on jewellery.
