Calm Expression & Inner Direction Talisman

Quiet Compass has no fixed north.

At its centre is a polished blue lace agate marked with drifting bands of powder blue, cloud white and the faintest traces of warm earth. Its soft, layered pattern seems to change depending on which end is facing upward—which is precisely why I gave it two.

A bail at each end allows the pendant to be hung in either direction. One orientation sends the stone’s bands rising like a pale horizon; turn it around and the same markings become a gentle current flowing downward. There is no correct position—only the direction that feels right that day.

I built the frame with a modified Herringbone weave in substantial 16-gauge copper. That is thick wire for this kind of movement, and it has opinions. Every sweep had to be persuaded into place while preserving the strong, rhythmic structure of the weave. The resulting framework feels architectural rather than delicate, creating a bold contrast with the quiet blue stone.

The reverse is completely composed as well, with a broad copper spiral resting over the agate like a compass mark. A hand-applied patina settles into the deeper lines of the weave and allows its raised edges to remain visible.

Blue lace agate is traditionally associated with calm communication, thoughtful expression and finding the confidence to speak without force. Its layered markings suggest that clarity does not always arrive in a straight line; sometimes we find it by turning something around and seeing where the pattern leads next.

Quiet Compass measures approximately 2.25 inches long by 1 inch wide (5.7 × 2.5 cm).

Two doors. Two directions. One steady centre.
Quiet Compass was made once and will belong to one keeper alone.

The stone drew the horizon. I left both directions open.

Stone Energy

Blue lace agate is traditionally associated with calm, clear communication and expressing truth without unnecessary sharpness.
Its soft blue bands carry symbolism of patience and composure—the ability to pause, gather one’s thoughts and choose words with intention rather than urgency.
The stone is also associated with perspective. Its layered markings remind us that a situation may look entirely different when approached from another direction, making it particularly fitting for a pendant designed to be worn more than one way.

MoM Notes

The double-bail construction is deliberate. A chain or leather cord may be threaded through either end, allowing you to decide which direction the agate’s natural banding and copper framework should flow.
Creating a modified Herringbone weave in 16-gauge copper requires considerably more persuasion than working with finer wire. Its bold curves and substantial structure are formed entirely by hand, without glue or manufactured settings.
The bands, small inclusions and subtle colour variations within the blue lace agate are natural characteristics belonging to the stone.
I protected the patinated copper with Renaissance Wax, a microcrystalline wax developed for museum conservation in London. I choose it because it provides the least obtrusive protection while allowing copper to remain copper. The wax will gradually wear away, and the metal will continue developing its own living finish.
Avoid soaking, chemical cleaners and abrasive products. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after wear.

Handmade with RE-Purpose!

Mother of Metal jewellery is handcrafted in New Brunswick, Canada using reclaimed copper and houghtfully sourced gemstones from around the world. Each piece is created with intention as wearable art and a personal talisman.
This commitment to reuse and sustainability is at the heart of my eco-friendly mission: "Jewellery with a RE-purpose".

Why Copper?

Copper is the great conductor and the metal of the magician. It amplifies the energies of the stones it accompanies. It is excellent for channelling and grounding and, thus, is considered the conduit between heaven and earth. Copper has long been used to aid tissue repair, blood support, and increase vitality. The larger gauges of copper used in my pieces have been reclaimed from castaway wiring, supporting my eco-friendly mission: "Jewelry with a re-purpose!".
